I found the metaphors used in this book to be enlightening and helpful in understanding what’s happening inside me. I also found the advice to be fairly common sense and actionable. I’m looking forward to reading other books in the owner’s manual series.My husband and I read it together. We decided we needed to start taking better care of ourselves. How cliche, right? Well, it happens that way. It does for many. It has for us. I find Dr. Oz's delivery so danged easy to digest and understand. I don't feel insulted by his delivery. I don't feel as if he's dumbing it down for me, because he assumes I'm a moron, and I don't feel like he swings the other direction and feels as if he has something to prove, so he writes so far above all our heads that the material becomes thick and difficult. This book reads effortlessly. And man, does he fill it full of things you should know, but never think about. I liked this book so much I started reading it aloud to my husband.

My husband was impressed enough with the material and delivery that he was interested enough to read it with me. We read this aloud in our down time - while we're cooking dinner, or lounging around. It's helping us understand our bodies better, and take seriously the change we need to make to help ourselves live better. I don't care about living to see 100. I do care about living independently, and without crippling health problems for the time I am here. This book is our favorite health-related book. Oz is a charming guy. I'm thrilled with this purchase.If you took anatomy classes in college, had a couple of biology courses, have been reading up on nutrition for years, and are a physical trainer, you may find the book too simple for the information you're wanting. But this book is great at explaining in ordinary words to the average person how the body works and what we should do, or not do, to maintain it like you maintain a car. It's a little light on the exercise parts, but that's because it's an allover body book and just gives you the basics for maintaining optimum health. So you get just the basics and minimum of exercise you need, and it provides those exercises. It's written with humor and plenty of illustrations, serious and humorous. Even though some sections were a little simplistic for me, I still found the explanations and illustrations interesting, informative, and humorous. Don't let the fact that the two doctors make money from writing and television. They are legit doctors. Dr. Oz is a cardiologist and still practices medicine. Dr. Oz is not associated with big pharma in any way, to my knowledge, as stated by another reviewer. Because someone is not only smart and accomplished, but also wealthy and famous, does not necessarily make him an idiot or unethical. If you are concerned with becoming healthy or maintaining good health, this is an excellent, down to earth guide for that.

It won't tell you to start training for a marathon, or eat nothing but raw food. Nothing extreme here. This is a common sense manual for the average person who wants to be healthy. I highly recommend it for yourself or as a gift.However, I have been reading and researching about the human body, health and diseases for many years to educate myself on the topic. This audio CD titled You the Owner's Manual by Dr. Mehmet C. Oz and Dr Michael F. Roizen is one of the best sources, like their later book that I had read titled: You Staying Young. Latest top quality information about the subject comes from two top medical authorities: Dr. Mehmet C. Oz and Dr. Michael F. Roizen. It covers all the relevant parts of the body by first clearly explaining how that part of the body functions, how it interacts with the rest of the body, the most common related diseases, their reasons, how they affect aging and how to minimize the risk of getting those diseases in the form of action plans. In the CD the doctors describe most possible alternatives. Another example is should you take aspirin as a protective measure from heart stroke and cancer also depends on your particular circumstances that must be decided by consulting your physician. The CD is enjoyable to listen to and easy to understand particularly because the doctors talk briefly switching turns. Thus the listener is not obliged to listen to the same voice throughout the CD. A single voice can be tiring and boring to listen to sometimes in other CD's even when the speaker is a very good speaker. You don't need to be ill to benefit from the advice in the CD, you may just want to maintain your present good health throughout your life. Now, having also listened to the audiobook in CD form I found some other things I need to correct in my attitude to protect my health and slow down aging ( I am a 50 year old man ) and will certainly apply them as well. The docs also give detailed advice about the amounts of vitamins and other supplements we all need to obtain optimum health. Chapters focus on the heart, nervous system, digestive tract, hormones, cancer, etc., and the book ends with suggested healthy meal plans and some recipes. My only criticism of this manual is that I don't care for the black and white drawings that feature little elves crawling all over various human organs. There are also a couple of comic strips that I found annoying, if not outright obnoxious. Despite this relatively innocuous descent into unsophisticated graphics, this book is one I highly recommend for basic information on the body and taking care of it. One of the authors has really taken advantage of this new found fame, Dr. Oz, and leads me to some skepticism regarding future pronouncements. For instance though I have been exercising for nearly 19 years and have read every possible book related to exercising, I found a few exercises mentioned in this book that I never bothered to give importance too. They have been careful to debunk some myths and make it clear that just because one study shows something doesn’t mean that it has been repeated or that those results are the final word on anything. I would have preferred to have nutritional advice that doesn't revolve around taking supplements. There is a nice cookbook at the end but I found it out of place since very little time is spent on the nutritional value of many of the ingredients compared to the time spent on supplements. There is still a lot of good health advice, even if the 2005 version is a bit outdated, but I still would have preferred a technical book focused on helping me learn then one focused on making me laugh.
