The test content was published in the fall of 2006, so potential candidates had time and opportunity to prepare themselves. Since the publication of the outline, many PACS SA professionals have tried to discern the key differences between the SIIM and PARCA certifications by the PACS Administrators Registry and Certification Association (PARCA) to allow them to make an informed decision on whether to pursue either one or both certifications. I would like to share my observations based on the discussions I have had with several SAs, in particular with those who have taken both certifications. The fact that the CIIP certification has been established is yet another justification of the need for some type of validation of a PACS SA’s skills through certification. The differences I personally observed are as follows: 1. Maturity: PARCA was established more than two years ago and has hundreds of members, many of whom are certified. It is not uncommon to see alumni using the CPSA, CPAS, and etc.Training organizations have had the opportunity to align training programs and produce study guides for PARCA, while this is still in progress for CIIP. 2. Entry requirements: CIIP certification requires certain experience and skills that have to be obtained using a point system. PARCA does not have any prerequisites, but rather requires the candidates to prove their experience by way of an exam containing both clinical and IT skills. 3. Global reach: The fact that the PARCA exam can be taken online enables candidates to take this at any time, from any location. This allows for international, and U.S.-based candidates to be certified without having to travel on specific dates to centers which as of now are only located in the U.S. 4. Levels of certification: CIIP has only one level. PARCA has four different levels: an Associate, System Analyst, Interface Analyst and Manager level. Each level requires a separate exam. 5.

Requirements: CIIP and PARCA are distinctly different in that CIIP appears to concentrate more on the “soft” skills. For example, the CIIP outline specifies the need to know about procurement, project management, training and education; subjects that are not addressed as part of PARCA. On the other hand, the subject of HL7 and to a lesser degree DICOM is barely mentioned, which is a major part of the PARCA CPIA certification. There is a definite overlap with regard to the clinical and IT requirements. However, it is clear that overall both certifications have a very different focus and emphasis. 6. Emphasis: PARCA is primarily focused on PACS, although not necessarily radiology only; whilst CIIP has made a conscious effort to address imaging at an enterprise level from the start. It will be interesting to see in the near future how both PARCA and CIIP will develop: Will they come together, grow apart, or continue to address the certification needs of two different classes of professionals. Only time will tell. The Picture Archive and Communications System (PACS) is the digital solution to storage, transfer and viewing of medical grade imaging. A PACS administrator may also have experience with a Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) or Imaging Sharing Platform. PACS, VNA and Image Sharing all fall under the category of Imaging Informatics. How to become a PACS Administrator. How to become a Radiology PACS Systems Analyst? We’ll take a look at the overall requirements needed to receive your first job offer. Since you may be looking to get your first job in this field, we’re assuming you have no experience as a PACS analyst. In this guide, we’ll show you how to get there. You’ll find the step by step guide much easier. However, this guide is meant to reach out to all audiences. What’s the difference. Which one do I apply to? The video we created below explains the possible differences across each role.

However, sites may use the titles PACS Administraor, Radiology Systems Analyst, interchangeably. Ultimately it’s the same role with slight differences. This definition may change from site to site. PACS is the picture archive and communication systems. Fancy name for the storage repository where diagnostic images are sent. MRIs or X-RAYs get sent from the modalities (or devices) to the PACS system. The PACS Administrator is responsible for ensuring images get sent to the correct patient. They can assist in resolving any errors. For example, a common mistake made by the users is sending an image to the wrong patient. A PACS admin can assist in getting the images to the correct patient chart. His role can be hands on whether it’s as easy as bringing a new keyboard to a radiologist, or swap out a faulty video card from the radiologist’s computer. A PACS admin can definitely expect to get dust on his shirt and tie as he squeeses into tight places to exchange hardware. They can do this alone or with someone from the networking team. For example, a certain device is no longer able to send to PACS after a repair. The PACS administrator would have to check if any of the details on the device was changed. For example, if the configuration to send images to PACS was lost during the repair. The pacs analyst role is project based. Instead of only resolving day to day issues, they’ll also be required to provide long terms solutions. These long term solutions come in the form of projects. This includes, upgrading the entire PACS software, installing new modalities, making database changes, upgrading infrastructure, rolling out software and communicating closely with the end users to determine to how meet their needs. The analyst role can be flexible or fully remote. The role can be you to be at the hospital configuring a new device on a Monday, then at a cubicle at an office building on Tuesday, then working from home Wednesday.

Oh and also working from home Saturday night at 10:00PM instead of watching your favorite TV show. Did I mention that? Typically Healthcare IT roles will require off-hours support where you’ll need to work on the system when you have the least amount of users. This is usually during the middle of the night. You already have a career in medical imaging. Some examples are ultrasound, x-ray, or MRI technologist. You already have a career in information systems. Some examples are network engineer, systems analyst or application analyst. You are willing to learn. Like any other new challenge, obstacles will come in the form of failure. It will come often but you simply must try again until you overcome it. Convince others you can do this. Be persistent. Hardest part is getting your foot in the door. Once you’re in, even with barely a year experience, the opportunities will be endless. I know because I looked it up. You’ll need hands-on learning, experience, self-learning. You could be an expert on the clinical side but you’d need to learn more Information Systems. You could be a Network Engineer but you’d need to learn more on the Clinical side. My college professor once said you can tell how truly intelligent a person is by their ability to say “I don’t know”. By admitting, you will be open to learning new things. You must have the ability to take initiative and do your own research. In fact select a few I highly recommend these books if you want to stand a chance in the interview. Each chapter contains practice exams that can help solidify the chapter contents for you. Lastly, the chapters of the book are based on the topics that are covered in the CIIP certification exam. If you’re an X-RAY, CT tech, you’re likely eligible for this test. So it would make sense to read this book on your path to certification as a certified imaging informatics professional. The reason why I chose this book is the same as the above.

It’s a book that’s geared towards a specific certification exam. As you read, you’ll learn about network communication concepts that are integral in the PACS field. In addition, you’ll be preparing for a certification. If you’re a wiz and you can master this certification, you may get an entry level job as a network engineer. But let’s keep our eyes on the prize. You want to become a PACS administrator. I recommend just about any book from amazon to learn medical terminology. At a minimum, just read the 1 Imaging Informatics book. However, for those avid readers, we have additional recommendations. Learn about some of the major concepts including DICOM and workflows. Do you know what DICOM is. If not, check out a high level overview in the video below: The description from the DICOM Standard below. To compliment this book, check out Professor Messer’s Youtube channel. He has a series of training courses organized into youtube playlists. These videos are awesome. There are 101 videos in this specific course but organized into short segments. Don’t have to time to watch youtube videos. No problem, next time you’re driving in your car put this on instead of the radio. Or next time you’re doing dishes or the laundry. Put this on. If you’re an imaging technologist then you may already understand this. If you’re not then check out the video below by Dr. Marc Kohli. It’s an amazing explanation of the workflow. Dr. Kohli does a great job at making this complex subject something anyone can understand. The collaboration between ARRT and SIIM makes the CIIP designation an attractive choice. Make up your mind about the goals you want to reach with your new PACS system. Is it, for example, better performance, higher stability or up-to-date-technology you’re interested in. Decide where to focus on: Increasing the efficiency of your clinical workflows as well as implementing a scalable and modular PACS system that adapts easily to changes in the structure of your facility. How can you keep up without compromising in reading performance. In the long run a powerful Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) will be inevitable. Delaying PACS replacement can have serious consequences in terms of sustainable business success and maximizing productivity for fast reading turnaround times. What adds to that are the evolving requirements of referring physicians and patients. The question is: What are the indicators and reasons to identify with certainty that your current PACS no longer corresponds to the needs of your institution. What are the key indicators for a PACS replacement. The average system lifespan of a PACS system lies between six and 10 years. Furthermore, IT changes and regulatory requirements start to diminish the efficiency almost right away. Make up your mind about the appropriate system sizing in relation to the projected throughput and case complexity. Best approach analysis Finally, compare the offered solutions with your requirements and goals. Please inform all involved parties about the upcoming renewal.

The kind of infrastructure that enables a smooth transition Ensure parallel operation of both systems with almost no interruption of the clinical workflow. Radiologists will be pleased that they can work with syngo.plaza already during migration. It will be a fluent transition from the old to the new PACS system. Due to the tight linkage of RIS and PACS a data cleanup might be necessary. Intelligent prefetching of any older patient data facilitates the workflows. Multi-threading speeds up the migration while the migration control permanently balances the load sharing to avoid any impact on the radiologist’s workflow. A migration manager will supervise the migration from the first to the last day and will help you with any issue or question. Customizing the new PACS system Adapt the application settings to the specific needs of the different users and clinical workflows. Layouts can be customized as well as loading or archiving rules. At last: The final check When the implementation and the customizing have been completed there will be a validation to proof this. Is the data in the new PACS system correct and complete. A final project report will verify if all goals have been reached or if there are still some adjustments to be made. Then, holding the upper tube in one hand and the lower tube in the other, slide the fork together, and jerk it lightly to full extension. Repeat this until the two tubes come apart. Dirt Rider 09 The old seal, bushings and a washer will all come out with the steel tube. On some models that washer can cup and should be replaced. On modern forks it may be a machined part that must go in a certain direction, so make note of its orientation. Dirt Rider 10 Remove the old bushings. One slides off, the other must be spread by inserting fingernails into this vertical slot. You can see that the Teflon coating is peeled back from the removal process. This bushing must be replaced with a new one. Dirt Rider 11 The bushings are steel but are plated with brass and the wear surface is coated with Teflon. We straightened this bushing to make the wear easier to see. If you can see the steel on the side opposite the Teflon, like on this one, get new ones. Dirt Rider 12 Race Tech recommends changing the bushing often, anyway. This close-up photo of the bushing surface reveals metal chips imbedded in the surface of the Teflon. Metal chips aren\'t as nice to slide on as Teflon, so this bushing is toast. Dirt Rider 13 The damping pistons and valve shims are held on with a nut that's locked on by mushrooming the end of the shaft. To remove the nuts it's necessary to file or grind the spread or mushroomed part of the cartridge rod and the compression base valve. Williams has the control to grind it. We'd recommend a file. Dirt Rider 14 Once the staked end is ground smooth, the nut holding the valve stack on should come off easily. The wire is held against the threaded end, and the parts slide up onto the wire. Dirt Rider 15 The valving shims must flex to control the flow of oil through the damping pistons. Eventually that flex will fatigue and wear out the shims. If the shims have wear marks, then they should be replaced.
