My sad tale: Three months ago I purchased an E550 and promptly encountered the “zoom error” lock-up. With assistance from this forum I resolved the issue and I purchased an adapter tube and filter to prevent future zoom lock issues. After a vacation trip and first real use of the camera, I discovered a spot on most photos with light blue sky backgrounds. Samples are at Based on several inputs, I decided to ship the camera back to Fuji in New Jersey. Forum feedback was that others had success in getting their cameras serviced so I wanted my then 2 month old camera repaired or replaced to eliminate the spot, to check the zoom lock-up and also to check what I thought was too frequent AF.According to the Fuji website, repair time averages 10 to 15 business days in NJ. I called Fuji a week after they received my camera to check on the status and also to be sure that they found the spot and were aware of the AF problem. I was told to call back in a week because it still had not been evaluated. A week later, and more painful waiting on hold to speak to a service person, I was told again the camera still had not been evaluated and besides, they had no E550 parts or replacements anyway.

Finally I got to the repair service manager, who agreed to expedite the evaluation of my camera but he also warned that E550 parts and replacements were out of stock with unknown date for arrival. A week later, the manager emailed me and offered “as a courtesy” to replace my E550 with an F10. I immediately declined the F10 because of its very different functionality compared to the E550 and also my use and investment in wide and tele adapter lenses. I responded that the only comparable camera for replacement is the E900. Fuji did not respond to my upgrade payment offer, so I figured I would get a repaired or replaced E550 whenever the parts came in. Now a week later, I just received a package from Fuji but it was a F10 camera without any explanation for the swap. I have not been able to reach the manager again but I emailed him that the switch was not acceptable and hopefully an error that Fuji will fix. At this point I don’t know whether I will get an E550 back or not. The F10 is probably a good point and shoot camera, but this is like bringing a 2 seat sports car with stick-shift in for service and then getting back a 4 door compact sedan with auto trans. Although the E550 had good reviews, my advice is to beware of Fuji products. The E550 had defects right out of the box and evidently quality control, support and service by Fuji are questionable. No parts or replacements availability after a year from its release??!!! This has turned into an unbelievable nightmare for what should have been a routine service and repair. I will post again to report any response or action from Fuji. Like you, I'm retired and disposable income is not something I'm wallowing in. And, like you, I've had my eye on a 550 for some time now. A friend is deliriously happy with his F10 and I may wind up going that way (or waiting for the 900) but for now, you've seriously dampened my enthusiasm for the 550. Thanks for making me think again.

dc3 Somewhere around 70 of the units manufactured during this period saw the repair shop within the first year, and as such under waranty. Now NAD has a very good waranty policy, which is a good thing, because some of them saw the repair shop again and again. Now an intersting thing: nealy 80 of the people who had one of these units die out side of warranty (even ones who had had waranty work done several times already!) went ahead and PAID to have them fixed. You couldn't have made me buy NAD equipment if it were 25 more off my employee discount. Any yet people claimed they loved them. Personally I never heard a difference worth putting up with that level of un-reliability for. Now NAD has significantly improved their reliability and gained my tust again, but I find it interesting; people's willingness to put up with a flawed product because they love what if can do right, despite all the things it does wrong. It seems that the same kinds of people are always atracted to these flawed products. Not always the same people for the flawed stereos and for the flawed cameras (and flawed cars, any Alfa owners out there?), but there always seems to a gerat deal of similarity between the followers each of the flawed devices. I smell psychology thesis! They need a rocket up their backsides; we have none of this trouble from Fuji UK, so Fuji CAN do it when they try. -- hide signature -- If consumers would stop buying poor quality items, then those suppliers either go out of business or they improve the product to stay in business. Aside from venting my frustration, I did want to let others know about poor Fuji quality and customer treatment. Unfortunately or fortunately, many in this forum have not personally encountered such problems and they may be enamored as you say with all the positive aspects of Fuji cameras to be concerned about the negatives. Anyway, it's not likely that I will buy Fuji products again. --VW The camera was only 2 mo.

s old when I returned it to Fuji so I will pursue this further. My approach may be to consider the F10 a loaner unit until Fuji provides a replacement E550. But I am still worried about the inherent quality and future support for the E550 as its production may be over now that the E900 is out. Had I not bought the wide and tele lenses for the E550, I probably would resign myself to the F10.--VW However I'd like to offer an alternative interpretation of these events - one that might not have been unreasonably used to refuse your claim for a warranty repair. My apologies in advance for any exaggerations or overassertions, I'm just hypothesising the defence position, using extracts from your various posts. This worked and you let the matter drop. Your confidence in the camera was sufficiently restored that, three weeks later, you went on to purchase a non-brand lens adaptor and add-on lenses to use with it, from Digital Innovations. But it's an approach that only makes sense if there is an intrinsic problem with a product that's going to create a high proportion of claims and is used as a claims-avoidance method by a company that clearly has no ethics - otherwise they wouldn't use it. That doesn't seem to be the case here; Fuji have accepted the warranty claim but are experiencing problems with lack of replacements and spares. So they offer an alternative which in many cases (though not this one) would have been acceptable to both parties. It's hard to judge a huge global company by a single experience with their service company in a single country, but I know from experience that this is exactly how people react, including me. I won't buy Hewlett Packard - ever! - for reasons I won't go into, yet the millions of happy HP customers would think I'm mad. Fuji? My experience with them over the years has always been good, although I only recently bought one of their digital products so maybe things have changed. I hope not. -- hide signature --.

John Bean PAW 2005 Week 41: PAW index page: That way perhaps those who stick to the makers' instructions might get their genuine problems sorted a bit faster! The only recourse was to send it in for repairs. Considering that the place of purchase did not have any others that I may exchange it for - I decided to send it in to Fuji. I too have called them several times after them receiving it and they stated that it has not been evaluated yet. Whats interesting is - My problem appears to be a common defect on the E550 and the F810 (as they share the same lense) - I wonder why Fuji has not issued an advisory on this. Please do keep us updated VW.As I will too. Thanks,My use of an adapter tube and filter to minimize the lockup problem (a design weakness in the camera) is not an acceptable basis for denying warranty coverage. As far as re-seating the lens, I expect that is the same repair procedure that Fuji would have used had I returned the camera to them. Neither the user manual nor the warranty statements prohibit use of third party accessories. The manual does indicate that commercially available filters and adapters can be used with Fuji lenses. Interchangeable photographic accessories are standard practice and in absence of any statement not to use third party items, there is no basis to deny warranty coverage because I used them. Unless Fuji claims that my accessories constituted abuse or mishandling, I maintain the accessories did not cause the sensor spot nor provide less dust protection than the Fuji adapter. As an engineer, I would evaluate the Fuji adapter and compare it to mine for any differences. Also, there is no warning in the manual that the adapter ring is essential to dust protection and that the adapter should not be left on the camera. Finally, other users have also reported similar spot problems with cameras right out of the box which also suggest a production quality control issues and poor testing.

But I do hope that Fuji will correct a poor decision in replacing my camera with an F10 when I had replied that it was not acceptable. Aside from the warranty technicalities, the other important consumer issues are whether or not there is adequate parts support for a camera released just over a year ago, and what constitutes a reasonable replacement (i.e., F10 for E550?) under warranty. This forum is valuable to me to get advice and wider perspectives and alternate opinions are welcome. Again, thanks for your response. --VW This current S900 thread reflects echoes - if in reverse, for the owner there is suggesting damage might be prevented if they only did so -And yet the way they're playing it - making their offer a matter of courtesy and neither accepting liability, nor denying it - has left you rather stuck. But I hope you get somewhere - no matter that they'd not planned for this many problems, Fuji should still expect to put them right - and not by handing out unwanted F10s that they've got lying around because the F11 has been announced. To finish, here's part of what I posted in that S9000 thread - '.Fuji agreed to exchange the F10 that was sent to me and replace it with a rebuilt E550. A new supply is supposed to arrive in NJ next week. He is also sending me a prepaid FEDEX tag for returning the F10. According to him, the F10 was sent to me by error because I had clearly declined the F10 replacement. Apparently with the E550 out-of-stock for almost 2 months, NJ has been automatically sending owners the F10 to replace E550!!! Aside from more delay, I should not be stuck with the F10. I am somewhat nervous about the quality of the rebuilt cameras which will have new lenses and sensors. I was assured that the cameras were never previously sold or used so they probably were rebuilt from the factory defectives. I will certainly post the final results.

Thanks to all, --VW It occurred on mine when I switched from playback mode to photo and the lens automatically opened very quickly and just grazed my finger. That slight touch was sufficient to trigger the lock-up. When using an adapter tube and filter, the lens mechanism will be protected as it moves within the tube free from obstructions. Thanks for your assistance. I also enjoyed your website photos! --VW Good luck, but I doubt any luck will be needed -- hide signature --. John Bean PAW 2005 Week 41: PAW index page: If yours is also at the NJ repair center, you may want call or email them to be sure they don't just automatically send you an F10 replacement. The E550 replacements are still in transit to NJ and are expected to arrive next week. Good luck,--VW It occurred on mine when IThat slight touchWhen using an adapter tubeI understand about the tube now - I've had the same sort of problem. With me it happens most frequently at my work table, when reviewing what's on in the camera prior to deleting files. And, from your other posts today, what a great result. Fuji may have thought it was the right thing to do but should have realised that automatically replacing E550s with F10s wouldn't suit everyone. Looking forward to hearing that all's well with your new camera! To recap, I sent in my new E550 under warranty because of blotches on all light blue sky backgrounds (suspect problem or dust on sensor). I also asked them to check it because I also had zoom error lockups and frequent inability to autofocus (AF!). A month later, Fuji sent me an F10 to replace my E550 because they had no parts or replacements. After I complained about the switch, they provided a prepaid shipping label and I returned the F10. It took another week for them to get the replacements back in stock. Total time was 41 days from when they first received my camera for repair until I received the replacement today.

When I persisted, Fuji did take action but response was slow because E550 was out of stock. I am happy to have a E550 back instead of the F10 but this was a real test of my patience. I hope that I never have to send it back for repair again. I really appreciate the support and advice received from this forum. --VW It will never improve unlessWe look at what the camera offers and who it might make sense for. 463 The smallest X-mount camera: Fujifilm X-E4 initial review first impressions Jan 27, 2021 at 14:00 Fujifilm's X-E4 is the most compact X-mount camera Fujifilm has yet produced, but that doesn't make it any less competitive.
