They feature the same electronics but not the same schematics, and I don’t get the same sounds from one or the other. They perfectly complement each other. The 800dv is a dual 700 (or a dual 770), but the 700s is not. I can guarantee that, if it were to be compared with another model I’d go with the 770 or PS900, but clearly not the 800dv. Neither the 800dv or the 700 or 700s featured these. It’s a bit tricky to do though, and the bend effect is limited to a single tone. Another thing you could IMO reproach this mini 700 is that I hate function buttons to be right under the keyboard. All this comes with beautiful woodwork, giving allure to this keyboard. Included pictures show my Mini 700s before and after I customized it. I personally use it alongside my Korg PE2000, both work great together. So why did the Keio ORGan company produce a little synthesiser with the most unorthodox controls imaginable, call it the MiniKORG 700, and try to convince us that it was worth buying. I don't know. But I'm glad that they did.The Korg 700Keyboards, especially synthesisers, were unknown. But I was entranced by the orphaned little Korg, sitting unloved at the back of the shop.Yet several top players - Vangelis and Kitaro for two - cut their teeth on a Korg 700. But why? It had just a 37-note keyboard, was neither velocity nor pressure sensitive, and lacked any performance controls. And as for its programming controls.Despite its limitations, the 700 was a remarkably capable little synth. Of the three (!) pages that comprised its manual, one was devoted to thirteen patch charts that provided an excellent demonstration of the instrument's flexibility.

The best of these was the 'Human Voice', and its wonderfully nasal 'aahhh' is instantly recognisable as a staple of early 1970s electronic music. Delving beyond the factory patches showed that the 700 could mimic many other analogue synths: its chorus waves captured the swirl of the earliest Rolands, and its dual filters imitated the thin tones of the first Yamahas without difficulty.For years I thought that complaints regarding the tuning drifts of other synths were the incoherent ramblings of chemically enhanced musos. Years later, when I discovered that these problems really existed, I simply wondered why no other company built synths that stayed in tune.This gave the Korg a huge advantage, and for a year or so it was perhaps the most popular synthesiser in the world. With a 700, a long blond wig and a flowing cape, the world was at your feet!Korg called this the 'Effects Section', and it marked the evolution of the 700 into the 700S.Most impressively, the Effects Section also added three modes of ring modulation. Two of these modes tracked the keyboard and were ideal for aggressive lead and bass sounds, whereas the third did not track, so each key you played produced a different timbre.Later in 1974, the company launched one of the greatest monosynths ever built. This was the Korg 800DV, which I first heard on a rainy August Bank Holiday Saturday in 1975 in Rumbelows' music department in Reading. (Don't laugh. Rumbelows was a significant music store in 1975, and the date is easy to remember: Reading Festival 1975 - 'Yes' headlined.) Store manager, Martin Lawrie (whom I met again 21 years later when he worked for Korg) was showing a customer how he could use the 800DV to play both parts of ELP's AquaTarkus simultaneously. This was synthesiser heaven!Notwithstanding the Volume, Key Transpose, and Repeat controls on the far right of the synth, you could take a hacksaw and horizontally cut its control panel into two equal and almost identical halves.

You then had, in essence, two Korg 700S synthesisers - one represented by the Upper half of the panel, the other by the Lower. And with two distinct synths, each replete with its own oscillators, filters, and envelopes, you could create two different sounds and play them independently.None of the 800DV's competition could produce two completely independent patches that you could play as either a complex composite or as two completely independent synthesisers. But this was still only half the story because the 800DV's unique Key Transpose and Repeat panels offered twenty voice allocation modes that allowed you to allocate the voices in a huge variety of ways.The second mode, 'BC', played only the Upper voice if you pressed one key, introducing the Lower when you pressed a second. Likewise with mode 'AD', except that the Lower voice played during monophonic passages. The most curious mode was 'BD', in which no sound was produced unless you played two notes or more simultaneously, at which time the two voices were allocated appropriately.These were: repeat the Upper voice only, repeat the Lower voice only, repeat the Upper and Lower simultaneously, repeat the Upper and Lower alternately, and execute a single shift from Upper to Lower. In retrospect, it is the fifth of these that is the most interesting. Why? Because this is the forerunner of the 'partial' based synthesis re-introduce on the Roland D50 more than a dozen years later. For example, you could set up a chiff on the Upper section, and a sustained sound on the Lower to synthesise a far more realistic flute than can be produced using a conventional monosynth. But my favourite 800DV patches were again the vocal sounds created by setting all four filters to emulate the formants produced by the human larynx. Instant Vangelis!Over and above two 700Ss, it offered a generous 44-note keyboard, extra waveforms, and extra footages (including a super-deep 64').

It also had separate outputs for the Upper and Lower sections, plus independent effect sends and returns for each. With its four oscillators, duophonic structure, wealth of instantly grabable controls, and all manner of strange synthesis capabilities, it remains one of the most impressive, flexible and articulate synthesisers ever.But it sounded great and I fell in love at first twiddle. Indeed, I was ready to trade-in my 700 right away (or as soon as I had sorted out the problems of transporting both synths forty miles on the back of a Yamaha XS500).But despite the radical redesign, the 770 retained the basic architecture that had made the 700S such a success. The twin oscillators offered 64' to 1' settings, 'chorus', noise, two types of ring modulation and, for perhaps the first time on a non-modular synth, an external signal input. The filters retained the traveler arrangement, but were now called high-pass and low-pass filters, and you could cross their cut-off frequencies without hacking bits of the controls. The filters also offered two levels of resonance, two LFO modulation depths, and both positive and negative envelope modulation. A complex VCO modulation section rounded things off, incorporating auto-pitchbend (with delay) and a delayed vibrato that was independent of the main LFO.Unfortunately, in 1978 (and before I bought the 770) Korg replaced their first-generation synthesisers with what was to become as extremely successful new series of instruments: the MS10 and MS20 monosynths, plus the MS50 expander and the SQ10 sequencer. I fell for the potential-laden patch sockets of the MS20, and all thoughts of buying a 770 went right out of the window. Immaturity ensured that I was blinded by the appearance rather than the sound of the new models, and I wasted my hard-earned dosh on an MS20. What a mistake that was.

Sure, the MS20 had a million tricks up its programming sleeve, but for simple, powerful, and easily accessible synth sounds, it was (and still is) exactly the wrong choice.In retrospect, we can see that, when they discontinued these and replaced them with the MS-series, they broke the mould that produced quirky and different little mono-synths. And that's a shame, because nobody ever put it back together again. But at least this story has a happy ending: it took me fifteen years to track down another Korg 800DV, and eighteen years to find another 770. On each occasion, they sounded as good as I remembered them.In the end, it all worked out right. Keep new and used batteries away from children. Listening to the Demo Songs You can listen to some songs we prepared, to let you understand what this instrument can do. Access the Demo mode ?? Press the DEMO buttons together.

Listen to all the Demo Songs ?? After accessing the Demo mode, do not press any button. All the Demo Songs will be played back. Choose a single Demo Song ?? Touch one of the options on the display (Songs, Sounds, Styles), then choose one of the Demo Songs. Exit from the Demo mode ?? Press any of the MODE buttons. You can return to this page by pressing the EXIT button while in Style Play mode, or the STYLE PLAY button when in a different mode. By touching items on the LCD screen, you can select pages, tabs, and parameters, and set parameter values via on?screen menus and buttons. Operative modes The pages of Pa700 are grouped in various operating modes. Overlapping windows Several windows, like the Style Select or Sound Select, the Global, the Media, or the Lyrics, overlap the current window. After you select an item in the window, or press the EXIT button, the window closes, and the underlying page is shown again. (The following example is the Keyboard Set Select window). Touch one of the available commands to select it. (Or, touch anywhere else on the screen to make it disappear, with no command selected). Pop-up menus When a down-pointing arrow appears next to a parameter name, touch the arrow to open the pop-up menu and choose an option from there (by touching the option, or scrolling the list with the VALUE control). As an alternative, touch the parameter name and use the VALUE control to scroll the list of options. Touch them to change their status. On Off Editable names When the Text Edit ( ) button appears next to a name, touch it to open the Text Edit window and edit the name. The virtual keyboard works exactly as a personal computer’s keyboard. Some of the symbols are context-sensitive, and only appear when they can actually be used. Then move your fingers up (or right) to increase the value, or move it down (or left) to decrease it. This also includes the Tempo numeric field in various pages.

Icons Various icons help identifying the type of a file, a folder, a Song. Virtual controllers Virtual sliders To change a virtual slider’s position, touch it and keep it held, then slide up or down to change its position. As an alternative, touch it, then use the VALUE control to change its position. Virtual knobs To change a virtual knob’s position, touch it and keep it held, then slide your finger up (or right) to rotate it clockwise, or slide it down (or left) to rotate the knob counter-clockwise. When the instrument turns on, it is already in this mode (this the Main page of the Style Play mode). 2 Press the MENU button on the control panel to see the edit menu of the Style Play mode. The selected edit section is always shown in the title bar: Mode Edit section 4 If the page is not yet shown in the display, touch the EQ Gain tab to choose the EQ Gain page. 5 Edit the parameters. If you were in Song Play mode, pressing EXIT would have returned to the main page of the Song Play mode. In Pa700, Select windows stay always open until you press the EXIT button. A set of Sounds playing together on the keyboard can be memorized as a Keyboard Set. To automatically recall Sounds and settings, you usually select a Keyboard Set. This is a special Keyboard Set, that is automatically selected when the instrument is turned on. The My Setting Keyboard Set My Setting is a special Keyboard Set, where you can save your preferred settings for things like Keyboard Sounds, Effects, Assignable Switches, a Style to be selected on startup. Open the Keyboard Set Select window from the control panel 1 Be sure the SET LIST indicator is turned off. 2 Press one of the buttons of the KEYBOARD SET LIBRARY section. You will notice that each of them has an instrument family name printed over it. Select a Keyboard Set 1 To choose one of the available types of Keyboard Sets, touch the buttons at the top of the window.

Type of Kbd Set Meaning Factory Keyboard Sets included at the factory, that cannot be modified. Local Some models could include Local-type Keyboard Sets, that are Factory data customized for a particular country. In the end, you will see the name of the selected Keyboard Set in the dedicated area of the Main page. The Sounds assigned to the keyboard (shown in the right half of the display) will change. This is determined by the Display Hold parameter. Just play it! Using the pedals Pedals do different things depending on how they are programmed. Moving it forward usually trigger modulation, but this depends on the selected Sounds. With the electro-mechanical organs, pushing the joystick forward changes the rotary speaker’s speed. What it does when pulled back depends on the selected Sounds. This will also set the Tempo for the Metronome. Adjust the Tempo value from the control panel ?? Use the TEMPO controls to adjust the Tempo value (or the speed of the MP3 Song). As an alternative, for bigger Tempo changes, keep the SHIFT button pressed and use the VALUE control. The Metronome window will open, and the metronome will start playing, beating the current Tempo. Turn the metronome off ?? Press the METRONOME ( will stop. ) button to turn its indicator off. The metronome Setting the meter, accent and volume You can mark the beginning of the measure, by setting the meter and accent. Accent Meaning Off No accent. On The first beat of each measure is accented. Bell A bell sound is heard at the first beat of each measure. Adjust the metronome volume ?? Adjust the metronome volume by using the Volume parameter.

Exit the Metronome window ?? Press the METRONOME ( nome. Go to the Style Play mode ?? When turning the instrument on, you are already in Style Play mode. If you are not, press the STYLE PLAY button in the control panel. ?? If you are not in the Main page of the Style Play mode, press the EXIT button to return there. Open the Style Select window from the control panel ?? Press the STYLE SELECT button. Type of Styles Meaning Factory Styles included at the factory, that cannot be modified. Local Some models could include Local-type Styles, that are Factory data customized for a particular country. User Locations where you can load new Styles from an external device, or save new or edited Styles. As an alternative, press again the STYLE SELECT button. 2 Touch the name of the Style you want to choose. 3 If you want to close the Style Select window (and it does not close by itself), press the EXIT button. Chords you play on the keyboard will be recognized and will adapt the patterns to suit the music. Different sections can be selected to let you create a complete song in realtime. Accompaniment parts Accompaniment parts are like the members of a band. STYLE TO KBD SET indicator Meaning Off Styles do not select a Keyboard Set. On When choosing a Style, Keyboard Set 1 is automatically selected. When it is, the Backing icon appears in the Lower Sound’s area. If the icon does not appear, see below how to activate it. The button’s indicator on the selected VARIATION button will be flashing, meaning it is booked after the Intro. 3 Start the accompaniment. Choosing a Variation to play a Verse or Chorus Variations can be used for verses, choruses, bridges or specials. As an alternative, keep the SHIFT button pressed and press the STYLE PLAY button to open the Style 1 page. 2 3 Use the Auto Fill menu to choose the Auto Fill mode. Style Element Suggested use Break One-measure break ?? When the Variation is nearing its end, press the BREAK button to play a short musical break.

Choosing an Ending To choose the right Ending for your song, please note that Ending 1 plays a sequence with a prerecorded chord sequence and melody, while Ending 2 plays on the chord recognized on the keyboard. Keep a Style Element looping while its button is pressed ?? Keep an Intro, Break or Ending button pressed to loop it. Release it when you want the Style Element to exit from the loop. ?? If the Auto Fill function is turned on, keep a Variation button pressed to loop the corresponding Fill. Release it when you want the Fill to exit from the loop, and the Variation to start playing. Balance the Accompaniment against the Keyboard Sounds ?? While the accompaniment is playing, use the BALANCE knob to balance between the Accompaniment (Style) and the Keyboard (Keyboard Set) Sounds. For example, you may want to mute the ACCOMP (Accompaniment) group to play with the backing of the drums and bass alone. If you only want to listen to Drums and Percussions, press the ACCOMP.Press it again to reactivate all the accompaniment sounds. Turn the Manual Bass function on ?? Press the MANUAL BASS button to turn its indicator on. The automatic accompaniment will stop playing (except for the Drum and Percussion Sounds), and you can manually play the Bass line on the Lower part of the keyboard. When in Manual Bass mode, the volume level of the Bass Sound will be automatically increased. Choose the Pads by selecting a SongBook Entry ?? Choose a SongBook Entry. The four Pads it contains will be selected. What is a Pad? Pads are single-track hits or sequences, that you can instantly play with the dedicated PADS buttons. Play the Pads ?? Press one or more PADS buttons to trigger the Pads. ?? Play some chords, and transpose any Pad of the Sequence type. Stop a single Pad ?? Press a PADS button to stop the corresponding Pad.
