Check the latest browser version I looked at the owner's manual for the Dimension 8400 online and it will only support 1 GB per slot. The only way you could have 4 GB is if you had 4 x 1 GB sticks. Also you probably have Windows XP 32-bit which will only use up to 3 GB of ram. Your best best would be to buy just 1 x 1 GB stick and put it in there because you probably wont see any higher performance gains beyond that. Plus the since the computer is older it will be bottlenecked by the processor and video card anyway so adding a ton of ram wont be a miracle cure. I looked at the owner's manual for the Dimension 8400 online and it will only support 1 GB per slot. Thats my 2 cents. Link is below for a 1 GB stick. I appreciate that info. Only thing is on Dell's site it says the 8400's Motherboard can take up to 4 gb of ram. The thing is I want to get something good not no BS ram. So is crucial a good brand.The best for your money would be just to get 1 stick of 1 GB or maybe 2 sticks if you want to.
