This pedal work on the dynamics of your playing as well as boosting signals. These pedals were used in recording sessions where running giant pedal board or long lines of cables degrade your signal. This boost the response and added a lot more dynamics to the tone. It modify the high frequencies of your tone. What you get is more clarity and a cleaner signal. UTILIZATION Specifications Controls: Mix, Freq, Sens Connectors: Input, Output, AC Adaptor Current Draw: 24 mA (DC 9V) Recommended AC Adaptor: PSA Series SOUND QUALITY This is a boost pedal and a dynamic peal.The experts says play with this pedal on for a while and probably not notice much of a difference until you turn it off. This pedal doesn't add distortion to your tone or any other frequencies but just boosting those high frequencies to get you signal moving with more precision and clarity. It is a good pedal for recording with but if you are using a boutique amp then this doesn't make that much of a difference. OVERALL OPINION These pedals were manufactured for about 7 years from 1990 to 1997. They can be had on the classifieds all day long. Not a bad price for a pedal that may or may not be needed in your rig. I would recommend picking one up if you are about to do some recording because at this price it could be a no brainer.It isn't a rack mountable piece of gear as it is a stomp box. UTILIZATION The make up of the Boss EH-2 is quite simple to follow as it only has three parameters - it has knobs mix, frequency, and sensitivity - with an LED light to show the rate of sensitivity. That is all of the parameters that this has to offer although this doesn't mean that you can't get a good amount of varying tones between the parameters given. I think that just about anybody could figure out how to use this pretty quickly without a manual and regardless of experience. SOUND QUALITY The sound quality of the Boss EH-2 is pretty good overall even if you only use it subtly.

It is similar to other enhancers, exciters, and tone boosters, but it has its own sound and its own capabilities. I use the pedal with a Fender Strat and a '76 Fender Twin Reverb or '65 Deluxe Reverb amp most of the time for recording and live shows, so I think I've definitely been getting an accurate read on what this pedal actually sounds like and I definitely like what I'm hearing. While it isn't a pedal that I tend to use all that often, I like having it around because you never know when a unique enhancer like this will come in handy. OVERALL OPINION The Boss EH-2 is an older pedal in the Boss collection and is no longer made, but if you are interested in getting one you should be able to find a used one for a reasonable price. While I do think that there are some better options if you are just looking for a tone booster, this will definitely have the same effects and does have a very nice sound. I'm a big fan of the older Boss pedals as I not only think that they are great collector's items but generally enjoy the sounds they have to offer.I say he should just have a good ear and have not listened to music too loud, too long. Because FRANKLY! Must be deaf or have a guitar (or amp) rotten to not hear the difference. I found this really great pedal. It allows me to enhance certain frequencies (his job) and totally change my sound. I can go from a thick sound, a sound very 60's light just by touching it (provided you have made the right settings) This allows many combinations if you play between its active pickups and one pedal on one or two of them, it changes completely.OVERALL OPINION If some find it useless, is that they do not need. I find it very useful, especially subtle.Now, who said rare, does not mean necessarily expensive.Because in general, an effect which we do not know what it can really give, we will not look at a price defying logic.

It steals some of your original tone and then lets you add some very artificial sounding presence.I think there might be a bit of harmonic generation also happening on the high frequencies, kind of like an enhancer. But the EH-2 definitely has that expansion thing going on. The EH-2 is an unfairly maligned, much misunderstood pedal. I held on to mine for quite a while. It worked for me, I think, mainly because I play fingerstyle; my attack ranges from barely brushing the strings with my fingertips to popping them like a bass player. What happens when you give the EH-2 a lot of dynamic range to work with is that it exaggerates your playing dynamics. Play softly and the guitar sounds normal. It's a very dramatic effect when played well. But, yah, if your playing dynamics are mostly constant then the EH-2 will either sound like it's sucking tone (not excessively, just the normal Boss buffer lossage) or thinning out your sound, depending upon how you set the controls. Path B goes to a variable sensitivity rectifier which feeds the control input of a VCA (pin 3). So the input signal is being filtered and EQ'd and put through a VCA. The output of the VCA (pin 2) feeds an emitter follower (buffer). The output of the buffer goes to another inverting gain of 1 stage. The output of the two buffers is variable from the MIX knob. By adjusting the MIX knob, some frequency cancellation takes place since the signals are out of phase. The MIX knob is being used as a level and phase control. The ends are fed by signals of opposite phase. When the wiper is in the middle the signals cancel and you get zero output. Move the wiper toward one end or the other and you get an increasing amount of in-phase or out-of-phase signal to mix with the original. I can't quite make out the nomenclature on the VCA. Is that a NE570? And you're right, there's no distortion generator. At least not intentionally so. Thanks again for the schematic. My experience with the EH-2 was that the harder and more dynamically you play, the worse it sounded. In case you're wondering, I don't like compressors much either BTW.To be fair, I didn't like my EH-2 enough to hang onto it. I didn't have a difficult time getting an acceptable sound out of it; IIRC I preferred the '-' side of the mix control and found that the freq control setting was critical but easy to set. OTOH there was a very narrow range of settings that I'd consider acceptable. IME this is true of a lot of Boss pedals. I agree with you about the artificiality of the sound, and that's ultimately why I sold the EH-2. Like you, I wanted something to provide a more subtle enhancement of playing dynamics. It's an interesting effect and I found some good uses for it, but it's not one of those effects (like reverb, for me) that I'd want to incorporate on a regular basis. I still think there's some promise in an expander-type device. But what it does. really complicated to know. For me it must be the first pedal in the chain. The place where you place it change a lot. With all knob at max, or in positive value. I know some people use it after gain or effects, in this case i feel like it's artificial and thin sound. Also, i think it really depend of your pickup and the whole setup. What i think it does for me in my setup is: The more hard i hit the note, the more the high treble will pass in a filter that make it more bassy and less high treble, leaving mid and bass unchanged. And if i play softer it have less effects. I like a jazzy bass ultra clean sound. For those who want a more treble clean sound maybe it's not so good, or maybe using in inverse. That's strange because i don't know if people now will said that normally the effect must be the inverse of what i said with my mix control to the max value.. But that's what i feel. Without the pedal i feel like my sound has lot of bad high treble depending maybe on my pickup.

The eh2 make it sound fuller and more mid bass, but it don't remove the high like an eq, it just make it sound more bass and mid, retaining the clarity but with less high aggressive frequency.. Then with distortion after, it doesn't change a lot but give also less aggressive but a strong beautiful sound. Also, it only change the attack, then the treble come back when the sound fade. For me it's a regulation of the treble frequency that in the hard attack of the signal have a sound that i don't like, then it had more treble in softer or after the attack. But what it does. really complicated to know.As EH-2 keeps confusing people here's some info. Boss EH-2 Enhancer was in production from April 1990 to December 1997. Boss ad used to say that the EH-2 adds brilliance, dynamics and presence to your sound. Essentially the pedal is a dynamic range expander. You can change the frequency range that's being affected with the FREQ knob. Boss recommends to tune this control to the lower range to make the effect more prominent. Turn it clockwise for a more pronounced effect. MIX knob sets up the portion of wet signal that is mixed up to the dry one. Clockwise from noon wet signal is added to the dry signal. This is a natural enhancement, that you most probably would want to use. It adds nothing when at noon. Going counterclockwise the wet signal is subtracted from the dry one. Yep, exactly what Boss has promised: more brilliance, dynamics and presence in your sound. EH-2 does the same thing as mysterious BBE Sonic Maximizer but has more controls and their naming looks more reasonable. Here's a nice EH-2 review at TGP with a demo link. The groundbreaking parametric EQ on the MT-2 was a major technological leap that enabled the Metal Zone to generate a much wider variety of tones than the HM-2 could. Within 7 months of the Metal Zone’s release, production of the HM-2 ceased forever. It’s a subtle effect that has in the past, fooled some guitarists into thinking it is a “bypass” effect. To others though, the EH-2 is a studio or performance tool like no other. It filters off the high frequencies of your guitar tone, and amplifies them (while also generating harmonic overtones). The amount of amplification depends on how hard you play the guitar, i.e. the harder you play, the more the treble frequencies (and overtones) are amplified. In a final neat trick, when you mix these tones in with the original signal (via the MIX knob), you can either select between mixing in a regular polarity signal or a polarity-inverted one.Along with a unique pastel lavender paint job, there’s not a single knob to be found anywhere on the DC-2 chassis. In fact, its entire complement of user controls are 4 push buttons which allows the user to select one of the DC-2’s 4 preset sounds. That’s right, presets on a stompbox! At its heart, the Dimension D contained two independent BBD-driven analog chorus units. Presumably, in a boardroom decision to incorporate economies of scale, the BOSS designers were tasked to create an effect that used the same circuit that the NF-1 Noise Gate pedal used. From this brief came the idea to completely reverse the operation of a noise gate (which allows the note attack, then clamps down on the tail) and create a unit that muted the attack and swelled the volume of the note tail. However, the knobs on a Les Paul are positioned much more awkwardly to achieve this same effect. The concept of the SG-1 Slow Gear was to recreate this swell effect, completely automatically. Development dragged on much longer than expected, until eventually a suitable result was reached, and the resulting pedal was christened “Slow Gear”. The user demand wasn’t there and production of the pedal ceased within 3 years of its introduction. When the BOSS division of Roland first emerged in 1976, they repurposed the chorus effect from Roland’s famous JC-120 amplifier and made it available in a (gigantic) AC powered foot pedal, named the CE-1 Chorus Ensemble. Though the CE-1 had a slow start, it soon became a huge hit thanks to use by Herbie Hancock and Andy Summers of The Police amongst others and was largely responsible for getting the BOSS brand off the ground. This was no small task and the BOSS engineers took two years to be able to achieve this engineering feat, but the result was worth it. In October 1979, the CE-2 Chorus pedal was released and still stands today as perhaps the most famous chorus pedal ever and a benchmark by which all other chorus pedals are judged. The CE-2 Chorus adds all the depth and sparkle that are BOSS Chorus hallmarks, but also adds a fat, thick midrange boost when engaged that turned out to be a famous and sought after characteristic of the CE-2’s tone. For many players however, (including some of the biggest names in the guitar world), the CE-2 continues to be their go-to chorus pedal and one of the most loved BOSS pedals of all time.

The first 3 pedals to roll off the line were the PH-1 Phaser, the OD-1 Overdrive and the SP-1 Spectrum. Although some users found great use in its ability to sound like a cocked wah-wah or its ability to allow an instrument to pierce through a dense mix, most musicians were somewhat perplexed by the SP-1. Sales were slow and the SP-1 was discontinued from production in 1981. Keyboard and electric piano players however, did hold it in high esteem during its initial run. No self-respecting BOSS junkie can claim their pedal collection is complete without an SP-1 Spectrum on hand. This fact has driven second hand prices into the stratosphere, as rabid collectors enter into bidding wars over this most elusive of pedals. Indeed, it hadn’t been an easy feat. The custom IC chip (the same as found in the legendary SDE-3000 rack delay) could only just fit within the compact chassis, and the engineering team had an immense struggle trying to fit in all the rest of the supporting circuitry. The fact that they managed to do so was an engineering marvel, and after the public had picked their jaws up from the floor, they started buying the DD-2 in huge numbers, despite its substantial price tag. BOSS passed on these savings to the customer by dropping the price of the DD-2, however as the RAM prices kept falling further, an interesting decision was made. Although it has seen a couple of design revisions over the years due to component availability, today’s DD-3 pedal is still essentially the same design as the DD-2 pedal that first blew minds back in 1983. Collectors of course, still clamour to get their hands on a DD-2 for the sake of history, and indeed it is the pedal’s place in history that defines the DD-2 as a cult classic.
