Make sure that each carriage bolt is seatedproperly in the handle. 2. Locatehairpinclip in one holeon the weld pin on each side of lower handle. See Figure 3-2. a. Remove hairpinclip from this hole. Usinga pair of pliers,insert hairpinclip into the other holeon the weld pin. Repeat on other side. b. Insert a carriage bolt fromthe hardware pack into the upperhole on the handle mounting bracket. Secure with one plastic wing nut,also included in the hardware pack. Repeaton other side with remaining items from hardware pack. 3. The ropeguide is attached to the right side of the upperhandle. Loosen the wing nut which secures the rope guide. See Figure 3-3. a. Hold the blade controlagainstupperhandle. b. Pull starter ropeout of the engine. Release the bladecontrol.. 5. c. Slip starter rope into ropeguide. d. Tightenwing nut.

Insert post on cable ties into holes provided on the lower handle. Pull cable tie tight and trim excess. An adjustingplate and thumblever at each wheel positionprovides cutting height adjustment. a. Cutting Height Adjustment Levers One adjustment lever is located on each wheel and is used to adjustthe cutting height.All four levers have to be at the same relativeposition to ensure a uniform cut. Recoil Starter The recoil starter is attached to the right upper handle. Stand behindthe unit and pullthe recoil starter ropeto start the unit. Gas and Oil Fill-Up 1. Check oil level and add oil if necessary. Follow engine manual for this. 2. Servicethe enginewith gasoline as instructedin the enginemanual. See Enginemanual for locationof oil and gas fill. Drive Control The drive control is locatedon the underside of the upperhandleand is used to engagethe drive.Squeeze it againstthe upper handle to engagethe drive; release it to slow down or stop mower from propelling. Repeat until engine cranks. Let the rope rewind each time slowly. Do not prime to restart a warmengine. 2. Standing behindthe mower, squeeze the bladecontrol againstupper handleas shownin Figure 4-3. 3. Holding thesetwo handles together firmly,grasp recoil starter handleand pull ropeout with a rapid, continu- ous, full arm stroke.Keeping a firm grip on the starter handle, let the rope rewind slowly.Repeat until engine cranks. Stopping Engine 1. Release bladecontrol to stop the engineand blade. 2. Disconnect sparkplug wire from spark plug and groundagainstthe engine. Remove wire from the spark plug, thoroughly respect mower for any damage, and repair damage before restarting and operating. Extensive vibration of mower during operation is an indication of damage. The unit should be promptly inspected and repaired. Using as Mulcher For mulchinggrass, remove the grasscatcher from the mower. For effective mulching, do not cut wet grass. If the grasshas beenallowed to grow in excessof four inches, mulching is not recommended. Usethe grass catcher to bag clippingsinstead. UsingYour Lawn Mower Be sure lawn is clear of stones,sticks,wire,or other objects which could damage lawn moweror engine. Such objects could be accidently thrownby the mower in any directionand cause seriouspersonal injury to the grasscatcher.Referto Setup and Adjustment section for instructions on attaching the perating MoWer The operation of any lawn mower can result in foreign objects being thrown into the eyes, which can damage your eyes severely. Always wear safety glasses while operating the mower, or while performing any adjustments or repairs on it. Be sure no one other than the operator is standing near the lawn mower while starting engine or operating mower. Never run engine indoors or in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas. The bladecontrol must operate freely in both directions. See Figure 5-1. 2. Lubricate the wheelsat least once a seasonwith light oil (or motoroil). If wheelsare removed for any reason,lubricate surface of the pivotarm and inner surface of the wheel with light oil. See Figure 5-1. 3. Lubricate the torsionspring and pivot point on the rear discharge door periodically with light oil to prevent rust. See Figure 5-1. 4. The transmission is pre-lubricated and sealed at the factoryand does not require lubrication. 5. Followthe accompanying engine manual for lubrica- tion schedule and instruction for engine lubrication. Deck Care The underside of the mowerdeck should be cleaned after each use to prevent any build-up of grass clippings, leaves, dirt, or other debris. If this debris is allowed to accumulate, it will result in rust and corrosion. 1. Disconnect sparkplug wire. Drain gasoline from lawn mower, or place a piece of plastic underthe gas cap. 2. Tip mowerso that it rests on the housing. Keepthe side with the air cleaner facingup. Oil can draininto the upper partof the enginecausing a startingproblem. 3. Scrape and clean the underside of the deck with a suitabletool. Do not spraywith water. 4. Put the mowerback on its wheelson the ground. If you had put plastic underthe gas cap earlier, make sure to remove it now. Engine Care A list of key maintenance jobs required for good performance by the mower is given below.Follow the accompanying engine manual for detailed list and instructions. 1. Maintain oil level as instructed in enginemanual. 2. Serviceair cleaner every25 hours undernormal conditions. Clean everyfew hours underextremely dusty conditions.Refer to engine manual. 3. Clean sparkplug and resetthe gap once a season. Check enginemanual for correct plugtype and gap specifications. 4. Clean engineregularly with a cloth or brush. Replacing Rear Flap 1. To removerearflap, lift rear door, and pressflap in on either side to remove from hole. See Figure 5-2. 2.

Remove flap from oppositeholeand replace with new flap in the oppositeorderand manner of removal. 10 When sharpening blade, follow originalangle of grind. Grind cutting edges equally to keep bladebalanced. 4. Remove bladefrom the adapter for testing balance. Balance the bladeon a roundshaft screwdriver to check. It maycause damage to mower, and couldbreak causing personal injury.. Lubricate the enginecrankshaft and the inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil. Slide the blade adapter onto the enginecrankshaft. Makesure that blade is alignedand seatedon bladeadapter flanges. 6. Place bell washeron the blade. Align notches on the blade bell supportwith small holes in blade.Replace hex bolt and tighten hex bolt to torque:450 in. Ibs. rain.,600 in. Ibs. max. To ensure safe operation of your mower, periodically check the blade bolt for correct torque. Belt Care 1. Remove two shoulder screws securingfrontdrive cover to mowerdeck. See Figure 5-4. Pressinward on sides of front drive coverand release tabs that secure it to the height adjusterbrackets. Remove drive cover from mower. 2. Pull up on the belt keeper wire and pivotit out away from the drive pulley.See Figure 5-4 inset. 3. Roll the belt off the transmission pulley. Tip mower on its side with the air filter up to access belt from underside of mower. Slide belt off of enginepulley and thread through the opening in the belt keeper bracket.See Figure 5-5. 4. Replace with new belt, working around bladeand up through the belt keeper bracket.Makesure belt is firmly seatedon engine pulley while pullingfrom the other side and sliding it around the transmis- sion pulley. Pivotthe belt keeper wire backinto its operating postionand snap into the slot provided. Reassemble front drive cover. WARNING When removing the cutting blade for sharpening or replacement or when sliding the belt around it, protect your hands with a pair of heavy gloves or use a heavy rag to hold the blade.

An unbalanced blade will cause excessive vibration when rotat- ing at high speeds.
