FordLightning.com is your source for information about the Ford Lightning. Add a bookmark and make this your number one stop on the Internet. Produced in limited number in 1993, 1994 and 1995. Originally offered in black or red, the color white was added for 1994 and 1995. There were a total of 11,563 Ford Lightning trucks procuded of the first generation. Offered only in a standard-cab short-bed fleetside (styleside). This team transforms pedestrian production vehicles into asphalt-pounding race machines. The new truck features an Eaton supercharger to boost power. Produced from 1999 through 2004, a total of 28,124 trucks were made. The truck was only offered as a two-door standard-cab truck, with step-side bed. The truck offers 360 horsepower and 440 lbs-ft torque, and records a 6.2 second 0-60 time. The air intake manifold offers improved airflow, to yield 20 additional horsepower to reach 380hp. Torque also improves to 450 ft-lbs. Resulting 0-60 times have dropped to 5.8 seconds. The truck features an aluminum driveshaft, and a 3.73:1 rear axle ratio. Mono-tube Bilstein shocks improve handling, while the passenger side shock is repositioned in front of the axle to reduce axle-wrap. The wheels are also new. Unique headlamps, corner lamps, fog lamps and tail lamps with a modern clear front lens have been introduced. The roof-mounted third brake lamp is now illuminated by a sindle row of LED. Upper and lower grill inserts get a new design. Subsequent years retained many of the same features while demand lacked until it was dropped in 2004. It debuted at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The truck featured a Tremec T-56 manual transmission (borrowed from the SVT Mustang Cobra), 500-horsepower supercharged V-8 engine, independent rear suspension, massive Brembo six-piston calipers and gigantic 22-inch wheel wearing Gooyear tires. With potential power anywhere from 450 to 550 horsepower, if it sees the light of day.

This standard-cab Ranger boasts a 5.4-liter V-8 complete with supercharger from 2002 Lightning. Custom engine mounts keep the motor nested snugly under the otherwise stock sheetmetal. The designers appropriately reenforced the stock frame rails by fully boxing them and adding cross-bracing. In addition, the front a-arms, spindles and springs were pulled straight from its full-size benefactor. Likewise, the truck uses a narrowed Lightning rear-end and brakes all around. Power comes from a 5.8-liter Windsor V8 that is linked to a four-speed automatic transmission. Features include a CB radio, air conditioning, and a factor Privacy. The idea was to assemble passionate driving enthusiasts within Ford and some of its key suppliers into a small, cross-functional group of engineers, product planners and marketing professionals with a common mission: create vehicles to satisfy the desires of knowledgeable, high-performance auto enthusiasts. All vehicles that wear the SVT badge are designed and developed with four hallmarks in mind: Performance, Substance, Exclusivity and Value. Both went on sale in February of ’93. The Lightning was originally offered in black or red. White was added for 1994 and 1995. The truck was only offered as a standard cab short bed. Bucket seats with electrically-adjustable side bolsters and lumbar supports were part of the package. Suspension modifications made the truck stiffer and more responsive, and provided a 1 in front and 2.5 in rear drop in ride height, lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity and improving handling. These trucks were manufactured at Ford’s Michigan Truck Facility in Wayne, Michigan. The engine was backed by a 4R100 automatic transmission that sent power to the 3.55 gears in the rear end. The Lightning’s suspension system was one inch lower in the front and two inches lower in the rear than the standard F-150. Monroe shocks were used from 1999-2001 then replaced with Bilstein shocks from 2002-2004. The intercooler was redesigned to resolve a leaking problem that was addressed as a recall in earlier models. Another engine revision came in the 2003 Model Year when the lack of sufficient threads for spark plugs, was addressed and fixed, although “piston slap”, a mild knocking noise while the engine is cold, was still present. At the other end of the drivetrain, the final drive ratio was shortened to 3.73:1 in 2001. Also, in 2001 the drive shaft was increased in size to a 4.5-inch (110 mm) aluminum unit, from the previous 3.5-inch (89 mm) steel unit. With these engine and drivetrain revisions, Car and Driver magazine drove a lightning from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. The Lightning remained a standard cab and was only offered with a step-side bed. It was initially offered in just Bright Red, Black, and White paint colors. The 2000 Model Year brought the addition of the Silver color to the lineup. In 2002, True Blue, a very dark blue, was offered, but replaced with a lighter Sonic Blue in 2003. The 2003 Model Year also saw the introduction of the Dark Shadow Grey color. Click HERE for more details. In our mind, that became a huge challenge.” Zinkosky said that in order to haul a big truck like the 2004 Ford F-150 to a stop quickly on a road course, massive, heavy 6-piston calipers would have been required. In the end, too much bulky equipment would have been required to make a new SVT Lightning work. We realized there was a place where the OEMs weren’t doing anything, and that was this performance off-road truck right out of the dealership.” It made its debuted at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

An Eaton supercharged 5.4L V-8 provided 360 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque in 1999, and was later upgraded to 380 hp and 450 lb-ft. The engine was designed by Roush and Ford's Special Vehicle Team, upgraded with such parts as forged rods, lower compression pistons, and a forged crankshaft. While only 3 colors were offered in 1999, by 2004 buyers had 7 color choices. A special sport suspension with Bilstein shocks helped keep the truck planted through corners and high speed maneuvers. Dual-bore 57mm throttle body (single throttle body with dual 57mm ports). Water-to-air intercooler. The good folks from SVT worked their magic on a F150 and created a muscle truck complete with a brawny 5.8 engine and suspension make over. The 1993-95 Lightning was not particularly quick new (definitely not now), but it was able to haul a real payload unlike the GMC Syclone. Ford only fitted these trucks with E4OD auto trans, but today’s example has been converted to a M5R2 5 speed manual transmission making it a rare bird worthy of DT readership eyes. The seller is reluctantly offering up his prized truck because he is looking for a newer quad cab. The manual trans swap is said to look factory and only has covered about 1,500 miles since completed. The odometer shows 144,000 miles. This Lightning is a turn key driver that gets many compliments on the road. AC blows cold and is still filled with R12. The engine is stock aside from a side exit exhaust that is made up of Bassani and Magnaflow components. Other modifications include a Exstang Trifecta cover with bedliner and mat and custom gauge inlay based off a second generation Lightning. Recent maintenance includes new radiator, fuel pump, rear brakes, wheel bearings, seals, and more. The negatives are a missing center cap and the cab corners are starting to bubble up with surface rust.

MOTORTREND.COM Not to say that Ed Weschler is a wacky guy, he just loves shifty business, especially when it comes to his '03 Lightning. You see, unlike a stock Lightning, of which all of them came with a column-shifted overdrive automatic, Ed's SVT hauler is different-it packs a clutch and a gear jammer. Yes, when Ed wants to get the truck moving, instead of dropping the shift lever to Drive, he uses his left leg to depress a clutch pedal, while his right arm shoves the shifter of a T56 six-speed forward. Then the only choice is whether to walk the truck off the line normally, or dump the clutch and create clouds of smoke. What a wonderful choice indeed. While only a few minor upgrades were made to the powerplant of the truck, so far, the majority of the SVT special's novelty resides in the transmission choice. In fact, the 5.4L Two-Valve Triton motor was left untouched, save for the removal of the mufflers. Obviously, the appeal of this truck is the fact that you have to make every gear change manually.

As was to be expected, the swap took a fair amount of ingenuity and fabrication.Obviously, a new driveshaft had to be fabricated, and linking the tailshaft of the T56 to the Lightning's rear is a custom-built aluminum shaft. The clutch coincides with a Cobra R flywheel to get things under way from a dead stop. As for selecting each gear, the shifter was removed from the column, and the floor and carpet of the truck was modified for the long handle and Steeda knob that now protrudes into the cabin. We had to loop in something like four or five sensors in a different way, along with eliminating some entirely to finally get things moving. After all, the guy does own a few Ferraris. To satisfy Ed's wishes, Bob and the boys picked up the Ground Force catalog and ordered a bevy of suspension components. The front springs were swapped out for Ground Force items, along with a pair of the company's nitrogen struts and bumpstops. The same style shocks are found under the bed, along with Ground Force's rear bumpstops and shackle kit. A set of Boyd Coddington II 20-inch rims can be found on all four corners. After we got done putting the finishing touches on it, there were three Lightning owners who saw the truck, and there were mixed emotions about it. One guy thought it was cool, another couldn't have cared less, and the last guy didn't like it at all. I gave all three of them rides, and came back with a two out of three approval rating. The guy who didn't like it was pretty mad when I got done because I slid him around pretty good in it. Overall though, it's a great truck. It takes some shifty business to come up with something this cool. After all, it is a six-speed Lightning. The 38-year-old parts manager from Lake Worth, Florida is the proud owner of the amazing ’92 Mustang you see here.

It's been a long thirteen years since it's been gone and there's no sign of it coming back in any official form, but they had an idea to revive it in their own way - with a 650-horsepower tribute. Over a million people saw their initial Facebook post and our early coverage of it became one of the most popular articles in this site's history. And yet there I was, less than a week after its introduction, doing donuts with it in an empty airport. If hilarious amounts of tire-shredding power in unlikely packages is of interest to you, keep reading. Because of my close proximity to them, I got to do it first. My hour drive was rewarded with the opportunity to do silly things with a 650-hp truck. To get a Regular Cab F-150 without all the chrome, the only option is to get the XL trim which has limitations of its own. This means no leather seats, no big nav screen, and no premium audio. Some of the nicer options are tied to a chrome trim package, but since the old Lightning didn't have a lick of chrome on it, this one can't either. Even Ford dealers can't get around the OEM's packaging limitations. Truth be told, the Lightnings had even less. This truck is still nice to live with and it can work just as hard as any other F-150. It also plays quite a bit harder too. Their authorized Roush installers slap on a Roush Phase 2 supercharger and all the backing hardware that comes with it. This includes a high-capacity, low-restriction air filter and complete induction system, an aluminum intercooler, Roush high-flow fuel injectors, 60 mm dual-bore throttle body, and more. This supercharger kit will pass emissions in all 50 states. Its brakes are stock as well, but they handled regular street use just fine and had no problem holding the truck in place for some epic brake stand burnouts. I wouldn't say no to upgraded brakes though. The side exhaust, wheels, and Lightning badging are the only visible modifications made to the truck, but it's enough.

In fact, the only company even selling a lower splitter for one of these is Shelby, and you don't wanna know how much that costs. The upsides are that it's more powerful, a few hundred pounds lighter, and more advanced than the original Lightnings ever were. Also, 650 horsepower.Ride quality is still good despite the lowering kit and thinner side walls. It's noticeably stiffer over bumps, but it's nothing uncomfortable. The 22-inch rollers mean the steering is bit heavier than normal, but that's easy to get used to. The MBRP exhaust - for how amazing it sounds - will almost certainly piss off your neighbors and it does have some drone to it, but anyone writing a check for a 650-horsepower truck likely won't care about that. I sure didn't. It's unlike anything I've ever experienced, least of all in a truck. This thing just wants to go and it seems only an inch of throttle makes the difference between being a responsible adult and getting your picture taken at the county jail. Give it enough gas and it ferociously roars to life regardless of whether the driver or the tires are truly ready for it. Its power is brutal and it's served up without hesitation. At this moment, it stops being a truck and starts being a Lightning. So when we rolled into West Georgia Regional Airport and were escorted to our little play area, the real fun began. Pioneer Ford brought out the only other 2017 F-150 regular cab in stock to sort of compare with, but it sadly lacked the V8 option. Our little corner of the airport was an old dusty surface so we could only manage a hand-timed 6.2-second 0-60 sprint in the Lightning tribute. With a cleaner surface, there's no question this is a 5-second truck as is. We were nearly three seconds quicker through the slalom in the Lightning tribute thanks to the wider tires and lower center of gravity. It won't win any autocrosses but it works fine for the truck's intended purpose.

That being said, the Bilsteins they have planned for the next one can't come soon enough. I lined up at the far end of the ramp with all the aids switched off and punched it from a stand still. The wheels didn't stop spinning until I settled into third gear. It passed. I just had to make one small correction to the wheel to keep it going where I wanted. I expected Cobra 427 levels of sketch with its light rear end and short (for a truck) wheelbase, but it was all very stable and not at all terrifying. I don't think I'll ever experience anything else that's as eager to hoon as this. 650 horsepower being sent to wheels with very little weight over them means brake stands, donuts, and power slides are more certain than death and taxes. No matter where you are or what speed you're going, count on leaving a mark when you give it anything close to wide open throttle. Hooning the Lightning tribute is truly effortless yet completely satisfying. It never felt as if it couldn't handle what I was throwing at it and it didn't feel abused. If anything, it was ready for more. Between my hooning and Pioneer Ford's other tests, we drove it so hard that the adhesive holding the wheel caps in place melted off, but we could've been there all day. Trust me, I wanted to. Nothing has put a bigger smile on my face. A truck of all things can do stuff like this. It'll have everything this 2017 Lightning tribute has but with added Bilstein suspension (like the originals) and body-colored side mirrors. They're looking into adding an optional custom interior as well. It acts like the regular Ford warranty, but the truck can only be serviced at an authorized Roush dealer like Pioneer Ford. All of Ford's usual incentives and plan pricing still applies to this truck depending on the buyer, so your cost out the door could be up to several thousand less. By forcing a truck to do muscle car things, Pioneer Ford has created a package that can do it all exceptionally well.

It has addicting amounts of power and it'll eat through tires without thinking twice, but it's approachable and enjoyable rather than terrifying. It's immensely powerful, but it doesn't feel like it's too much for the rest of the truck to handle. Furthermore, none of the modifications impact its ability to work and it's still comfortable enough for commuting with. It's easy to think that nobody would ever need a truck like this, but once you've experienced it, it'll be hard to live without. The plastic trim piece is a match for the original and the hole pattern perfectly matches the holes from the original. No drilling holes or cutting carpet was required. This item includes the boot, the mounting trim and screws. It does not include the small rubber cone piece that seals between the top of the boot and around the shifter. So be sure to harvest that from the old one before installation. The top boot was all i could use, it seems decent enough. Only trouble is using it like this it’s not sealed at the floor like it should be without the inner boot installed but it’s better than nothing at all.Be sure to lube up the shift stick to get it to slide on.Fit perfect, even came with screws.Only 2 on the holes lined up it the cut outs in my floor board. As you consider the available options and trim levels for the 2020 F-150, you may be wondering about the availability of manual transmission. We investigated all the powertrain options for Ford F-150 to find out if the manual transmission has faded into the review mirror or not. However, the numbers aren’t lying when they indicate fewer and fewer Americans want the manual gearbox. Jalopnik shared insight that manuals on full-sized trucks, in general, haven’t been popular since the 80s. According to Automotive News, only about 1 of all new cars sold have a manual transmission. They’ve added a ton of options and reworked their lists of standards. Ford has added a family of driving assistant features within various packages, that were formerly reserved only for higher-level trims. There are a few new appearance packages available for even the XL and XLT. Imagine that beefy engine working with almost 700 lbs less truck. New F-150 owners in 2020 can also expect some standard tech, including 4G, LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities.
