Note: When the seatback release lever is pulled, slowly lower seatback to the flat position. Make sure safety belt buckle heads are through elastic holders on seat backs. To install the rear cushion 1. Push the cushion to the inboard side of the vehicle. The system is designed to help protect smaller drivers sitting close to the driver airbag by providing a lower airbag output level. To reduce the risk of injury, make sure children sit where they can be properly restrained. Never let a passenger hold a child on his or her lap while the vehicle is moving. Check seat covers and buckles before you place a child anywhere near them. Combination lap and shoulder belts 1. After any vehicle collision, the safety belt systems at all seating positions (except the driver position, which doesn’t have this feature) must be checked by an authorized dealer to verify that the automatic locking retractor feature for child seats is still functioning. The safety belt pretensioners activate during frontal collisions, and in side collisions and rollovers. A safety belt pretensioner is a device which tightens the webbing of the lap and shoulder belts in such a way that they fit more snugly against the body. Ford Motor Company recommends that all safety belt assemblies in use in vehicles involved in a collision be replaced. However, if the collision was minor and an authorized dealer finds that the belts do not show damage and continue to operate properly, they do not need to be replaced. To avoid activating the Belt-Minder feature for objects placed in the front passenger seat, warnings will only be given to large front seat occupants as determined by the front passenger sensing system. Crashes are rare events I’m not going far Belts are uncomfortable I was in a hurry Safety belts don’t work Traffic is light Belts wrinkle my clothes.

The people I’m with don’t wear belts I have an airbag I’d rather be thrown clear Do not sit on top of a buckled safety belt or insert a latchplate into the buckle to avoid the Belt-Minder chime.Airbags DO NOT inflate slowly; there is a risk of injury from a deploying airbag. Accident statistics suggest that children are safer when properly restrained in the rear seating positions than in the front seating position. Failure to follow these instructions may increase the risk of injury in a collision. After airbag deployment, it is normal to notice a smoke-like, powdery residue or smell the burnt propellant. This may consist of cornstarch, talcum powder or sodium compounds which may irritate the skin and eyes, but none of the residue is toxic. Several air bag system components get hot after inflation. The indicator lamp is located in the center stack of the instrument panel just above the air vents. Pass Airbag Off Occupant Indicator Lamp Empty seat Unlit Small child in child safety seat or booster Small child with safety belt buckled or unbuckled. For most objects that are in the front passenger seat, the passenger airbag will be disabled. Even though the passenger airbag is disabled, the pass airbag off lamp may or may not be illuminated according to the table below. Do not place objects underneath the front passenger seat or between the seat and the center console (if equipped). Determining if the system is operational The SRS uses a readiness light in the instrument cluster or a tone to indicate the status of the system. See an authorized dealer. All occupants of the vehicle should always wear their safety belts even when an airbag SRS is provided. The fact that the airbags did not inflate in a collision does not mean that something is wrong with the system. Failure to follow these instructions may increase the risk of personal injury in the event of a collision.

Children who are too large for child safety seats (as specified by your child safety seat manufacturer) should always wear safety belts. Follow all the important safety restraint and airbag precautions that apply to adult passengers in your vehicle. Choose a booster that keeps the lap belt low and snug across the hips, never up across the stomach, and lets you adjust the shoulder belt to cross the chest and rest snugly near the center of the shoulder. They can slide around and increase the likelihood of injury or death in a collision. SAFETY SEATS FOR CHILDREN Child and infant or child safety seats Use a safety seat that is recommended for the size and weight of the child. For more information on top tether straps and anchors, refer to Attaching safety seats with tether straps in this chapter. For more information of LATCH anchors refer to Attaching safety seats with LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) attachments in this chapter. The belt will click as it retracts to indicate it is in the automatic locking mode. Tether straps are available as an accessory for many older safety seats. Contact the manufacturer of your child seat for information about ordering a tether strap. The arrow in the above graphic points toward the front of the vehicle. If the tether strap is clipped incorrectly, the child safety seat may not be retained properly in the event of a collision. Keep the tether strap just snug without lifting the front of the child seat. Utility vehicles and trucks are not designed for cornering at speeds as high as passenger cars any more than low-slung sports cars are designed to perform satisfactorily under. This increases traction which may enable you to safely drive over terrain and road conditions that a conventional two-wheel drive vehicle cannot. The Quality grades can be found where applicable on the tire sidewall between tread shoulder and maximum section width.

Temperature A B C The temperature grades are A (the highest), B and C, representing the tire’s resistance to the generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel. Under-inflation increases sidewall flexing and rolling resistance, resulting in heat buildup and internal damage to the tire. It also may result in unnecessary tire stress, irregular wear, loss of vehicle control and accidents. It is normal for tires to heat up and the air pressure inside to go up as you drive. This information identifies and describes the fundamental characteristics of the tire and also provides a U.S. DOT Tire Identification Number for safety standard certification and in case of a recall. If the beads do not seat at the maximum pressure indicated, re-lubricate and try again. A tire can explode in as little as three to five seconds.Note: If your tires show uneven wear ask an authorized dealer to check for and correct any wheel misalignment, tire imbalance or mechanical problem involved before tire rotation. If you change your wheel size, you will have to purchase new tires to match the new wheel diameter. The next two numbers or letters are the plant code designating where it was manufactured, the next two are the tire size code and the last four numbers represent the week and year the tire was built. This pressure is normally higher than the manufacturer’s recommended cold inflation pressure which can be found on the Safety Compliance Certification Label or Tire Label which is located on the B-Pillar or the edge of the driver’s door. Note: The temporary tire size for your vehicle may be different from this example. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System is NOT a substitute for manually checking tire pressure. Inflate all the tires to the recommended inflation pressure. SNOW TIRES AND CABLES Snow tires must be the same size, load index, speed rating as those originally provided by Ford.

Properly loading your vehicle will provide maximum return of vehicle design performance. Once you have reached the maximum payload of your vehicle, do not add more cargo, even if there is space available. When towing, trailer tongue load or king pin weight is also part of cargo weight. The GVWR is shown on the Safety Compliance Certification Label located on the B-Pillar or the edge of the driver’s door. That weight may not safely exceed the available cargo and luggage load capacity calculated in Step 4. 6. If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load from your trailer will be transferred to your vehicle. Loaded vehicles may handle differently than unloaded vehicles. Extra precautions, such as slower speeds and increased stopping distance, should be taken when driving a heavily loaded vehicle. For definitions of terms and instructions on calculating your vehicle’s load, refer to Vehicle Loading in this chapter. Preparing to tow Use the proper equipment for towing a trailer and make sure it is properly attached to your vehicle. Make sure all running lights, brake lights, turn signals and hazard lights are working. Do not connect trailer lamps directly to your vehicle’s tail lamps. This can cause damage to your vehicle’s electrical system. In case of a roadside emergency with a disabled vehicle, see Wrecker Towing in the Roadside Emergencies chapter. Do not drive if you smell exhaust fumes. Important safety precautions A computer system controls the engine’s idle revolutions per minute (RPM). When the engine starts, the idle RPM runs higher than normal in order to warm the engine. Some warning lights will briefly illuminate. See Warning lights and chimes in the Instrument Cluster chapter for more information regarding the warning lights. If there is difficulty in turning the key, rotate the steering wheel until the key turns freely.Brake dust can be cleaned by weekly washing with soapy water and a soft sponge.
