Physical description 34 pages, 2 unnumbered pages: illustrations; 19 cm Contributors Reynolds, Osborne. The book is most carefully written, and is evidently the result of much thought, time, and intelligent labour. It is shown that these gases, being specifically lighter than atmospheric air, frequently ascend in pipes, and that they are also occasionally drawn in by the suction caused by the warmth of a house through accidental crevices in the drain pipes. It is proposed to remedy these evils by doing away with all traps except those connected with the pans of closets, and by placing a large trap in the pipe which connects the house drains with the sewer. A plan of this trap is given, showing that it is easily accessible, and can be cleaned at any time by even an inexperienced workman. The subject is one of even more importance than good ventilation. When we recollect that one of the most valued lives in Great Britain has been so recently imperilled from a mere defect in a system of drainage, we cannot too highly estimate the efforts of those who suggest, both by precept and experiment, the adoption of such measures as will ensure the safety of all sensible householders. It is the result of wastewater no longer able to leave the property through the sanitary lateral pipe that is connected to the City of Vaughan sewer, usually due to a blockage. This results in wastewater backing up into your property. Typically, a sewer backup caused by the City’s main pipe will affect more than one property on the street. This includes flushing toilets and turning on any taps. It is the responsibility of the licensed plumber to call Ontario One Call at 1-800-400-2255 to request a Sewer Safety Inspection. There is no cost to you for this additional service. If the hired plumber provided a closed-circuit television (CCTV) video that shows exactly where the blockage is, please let the City know. Any additional hours will be billed separately toPlease note the payment for the City's investigation is non-refundable in this case. Is there a fee? If it is determined that the blockage is found to be on City property, the City of Vaughan will reimburse the resident for the entire charge listed above. When poured down your sinks, drains or toilets, they eventually cool and can clog the pipes that take the wastewater from your house to the treatment plant. Small amounts of fats, oils and grease can be disposed of in your green bin. For more information on how to dispose of larger quantities of fat, oil and grease, visit York Region’s website. The property line is usually located at the curb box. The sanitary sewer lateral pipe that begins at the curb box and runs to the mainline sanitary sewer is the responsibility of the City to maintain. Vaughan, ON L4K 2N9.

Check with your city officials to determine if your sewage system is connected to storm sewers. Sewage not only can damage building components and carpeting, it also has high concentrations of bacteria, protozoans and other pathogens that can pose serious health risks. Water will seek the lowest level, so if the level of sewage or floodwater is higher than the drains in the home, such as those in the basement, a backup can occur. The check valves contain a flapper that allows flow in only one direction. Check valves should be inspected annually to make sure they are free of debris and working properly. If your home has a backwater check valve, the point to access it usually is found in the floor near the main sewage cleanout. (Figure 1) The valves generally are accessed through a holdout in the basement floor and can be turned off and on easily in the event of flooding or sewage backup. Once closed, a slice valve will not allow sewage flow in either direction, so toilets and water cannot be used in the home. (Figure 2) Have a licensed contractor install an interior or exterior backwater check valve in your sewage system. If you do not have a backwater valve, plugs with backflow devices can be installed in floor drains. These plugs have a ball or float that will stop water or sewage from backing up into a home while permitting water to flow into the drain. These plugs can be left in place year-round. If you live in an area that has a high potential for flooding and water levels are expected to be above flood stage, obtain the correct size plug needed for the drains in your house. Do not wait until flooding is imminent; plugs may not be available. Showers, bathtubs, sinks, washing machine drains and toilets can be potential inlets for sewage into a home. If bathrooms in lower levels of the house are not needed, the drains could be plugged in advance. Each home and drain can be different, so do not assume your home has a standard size for each application.

The ball is inserted into the pipe and inflated with air to the prescribed air pressure. Once inflated, the ball will not allow water to flow in either direction. (Figure 3) Twist plugs come in a variety of sizes and work well with floor, shower and toilet drains. They can be plastic or metal. (Figure 4) These plugs will be smaller in diameter than the pipe to be plugged on one end and larger than the pipe on the other end. The plugs are forced into the pipe and may need to be braced to prevent pressure from pushing them out. (Figure 5) The plugs have a ball or float that closes off when a backflow occurs. When sewage begins to back up in the pipe, the ball or stopper will float up and seal off the pipe. These valves can be left in place year-round but should be checked at least annually to ensure they are working properly. (Figure 6, 7, 8) Overtightening plugs potentially can break the pipe. Backflow float valves can be installed in floor drain pipes that only allow flow in one direction. These plugs work well in homes with new furnaces that have condensation drains leading into a floor drain. The float valve will keep sewage from seeping into the home and the furnace can continue to drain. (Figure 10) If plugs are not available, a flexible rubber ball that is just larger than the pipe diameter can be used in an emergency but will need to be braced in place. Place the inner tube on the floor surrounding the drain and cover it with a piece of plywood or solid board to hold it in place. Particle board will not work because it can deteriorate and crumble when wet. To avoid damaging the ceiling, place a 2- by 4-inch board or piece of plywood parallel to the ceiling. Then wedge a vertical 2- by 4-inch board between the board covering the inner tube and the board parallel to the ceiling. (Figure 11) Turn it clockwise until it stops. This will cause the water to swirl, and most will drain out of the bowl.

These drains often are corroded which can cause difficulty when plugging. Cleaning the opening of the drain or plugging with wooden pressure plugs may be required. If the shower drain grate can be removed, simply place a proper sized drain plug into the drain pipe and tighten until snug. These drains can be covered as described above with a thick piece of rubber or inner tube and then secured with a board or plywood. The seal needs to be held in place using the method described for bracing floor drain seals. (Figure 14) If an access panel was installed for the bathtub plumbing, remove the drain pipes and install threaded caps or drain plugs. If no access to the internal plumbing is available, place a twist plug in the drain. You may need to purchase an automotive or marine plug since the overflow drain is shallow. (Figure 17, 18) Some older homes have footing drains that lead to the sewer system. (Figure 19) Frequently they are corroded, so you might need a wedge plug. (Figure 20). Learn More. That the fumes of human waste could bring disease and death to those who inhaled them was an intuitive belief that had been tightly embraced since antiquity. It was a major component of the miasma theory developed by Galen, the great medical authority of the Roman Empire, who blamed outbreaks of epidemic disease on an atmosphere poisoned by the vapors of decomposing organic matter, be it feces, garbage, or corpses. Before the germ theory, miasma (polluted air) offered a more satisfactory explanation of epidemiologic phenomena than any other interpretation available and, indeed, served as the basis for the sanitary reform movement of the mid-1800s that brought about the establishment of modern public health programs. As sanitary reform's leader, London's Edwin Chadwick, put it, “all smell is disease.” 4 (p298) Yet, if all smells were bad, human waste was regarded as the worst of the lot. That there is room for improvement is evident to every practicing physician.

To the drainage of the house too much attention cannot be paid. The plumbing is best placed entirely outside of the main part of the house, and separated from it by an air space into which the sunshine and air have free access. Many people are obliged to live in houses where the lavatories are enclosed in the main part of the house, or, as Dr Price puts it, “in enlarged water-closets.” To these people we would say that much may be done to obviate their contaminative influence, first by keeping the plumbing in perfect condition; second, by keeping the bowls and traps clean, and third, by ventilation. Every householder should have a plan of his house drainage in order to facilitate the finding of faulty pipes or joints. The drain from the ice chest should not have any connection with the sewer or drip through the floor under the house. The ice-box and the waste pipe should be kept perfectly clean with hot water and soap. It would be a good plan to have the waste pipe jointed and removable so that it could be boiled. The introduction of medical bacteriology in the 1870s and 1880s rang miasma's death knell, but the theory did not die without a struggle. Rather, it passed through a long stage of denial, hope for survival being sustained by sewer gas. After all, sewers enclosed the refuse of the human bowel, evacuations that, medical science had discovered, could teem with typhoid, cholera, and other microbes. Surely air that rose from sewers and toilet drains to infiltrate the living quarters above could carry the virtually weightless germs in its ascent. Further, common experience demonstrated that the inhalation of stench made a person feel ill, so a sewer's fumes must lower the resistance of the body to germ invasion even as it introduced germs into it. Smell was still disease, but now doubly malevolent, being both predisposing factor and vector.

The smell of the sewer had yet another dimension of viciousness, for it invaded only those houses with indoor toilets, which in the late 19th century meant the homes of society's more affluent, productive members (who, despite their wealth, often balked at investing in the newer drainage systems). Hitherto, smell and disease had been thought of as the province of the poor in their garbage-filled tenements; now it was the mansion that harbored the seeds of destruction. The homes of the rich might seem “to lack nothing to promote comfort, enjoyment, and health,” a writer in the North American Review observed in 1883; but in truth, they were “mere whited sepulchers, and their luxurious inmates are exposed to constant risk of disease and death” 8 (pp173-174) (quoted by Tomes, whose book is a superb examination of the American public's reception of and reaction to the early germ theory 9 (p48) ). Not even the highest house in the land was immune. When President James Garfield was shot in 1881 and taken to the White House to be treated, his steady decline over the following weeks at last came to be blamed not on the assassin's bullet still lodged in his back, but to the executive mansion's obsolete plumbing system. A “well-known plumber” told a New York newspaper that “the real trouble” in Garfield's case “is sewer gas,” while the Sanitary Committee of the Master Plumbers of New York offered to outfit the White House with sewer traps at no charge. Instead, the president was moved from Washington, DC, to his summer home in New Jersey, despite physicians' fears that he could not survive the journey; he died in New Jersey less than 2 weeks later. Such was the Germicide, a unit installed above the toilet to periodically dispense the disinfectant zinc chloride into the toilet water and spray antibacterial thymol into the air every time the toilet lid was lifted or lowered.

Sewer gas did at last succumb to science, being discarded by the medical profession as the source of disease during the first decade of the 20th century. The dean of the American public health establishment, Providence, Rhode Island's Charles Chapin, summed up the change in his 1910 classic The Sources and Modes of Infection: “Though I began my public-health work with a fairly strong belief in the danger” of typhoid, diphtheria, and other infections from sewer fumes, “it is no longer a plausible hypothesis.” 10 (p229) Nevertheless, although sewer gas flourished, this “contaminative influence,” as Harvey called it, was the source of considerable uneasiness for both physicians and the public— and equally considerable income for plumbers. ?The Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1878, in Memphis, Tenn. For the street runoff drainage system, see storm drain. Sanitary sewers are part of an overall system called a sewage system or sewerage.Sanitary sewers are sized to carry the amount of sewage generated by the collection area. Sanitary sewers are much smaller than combined sewers designed to also carry surface runoff. In municipalities served by sanitary sewers, separate storm drains may convey surface runoff directly to surface waters. Sanitary sewers are distinguished from combined sewers, which combine sewage with stormwater runoff in one pipe. Sanitary sewer systems are beneficial because they avoid combined sewer overflows.

The decision to build a combined sewer system or two separate systems is mainly based on the need for sewage treatment and the cost of providing treatment during heavy rain events. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. A smaller line enters from the bottom of the photo under the access steps. The concrete floor of the manhole has channels to minimize accumulation of solids. Vertical pipes, usually made of precast concrete, called manholes, connect the mains to the surface. Depending upon site application and use, these vertical pipes can be cylindrical, eccentric, or concentric. The manholes are used for access to the sewer pipes for inspection and maintenance, and as a means to vent sewer gases. Branch sewers typically run under streets receiving laterals from buildings along that street and discharge by gravity into trunk sewers at manholes. Minimum sewer diameters are often specified to prevent blockage by solid materials flushed down toilets; and gradients may be selected to maintain flow velocities generating sufficient turbulence to minimize solids deposition within the sewer.A lift station is a sewer sump that lifts accumulated sewage to a higher elevation. Most of the solids are removed by the septic tanks, so the treatment plant can be much smaller than a typical plant. In addition, because of the vast reduction in solid waste, a pumping system, rather than a gravity system, can be used to move the wastewater. The pipes have small diameters, typically 1.5 to 4 inches (4 to 10 cm).Although the investment cost for simplified sanitary sewers can be about half the cost of conventional sewers, the requirements for operation and maintenance are usually higher.

Pipelines range in size from pipes of 10 centimetres (3.9 in) in diameter to concrete-lined tunnels of up to 9 metres (30 ft) in diameter. A low pressure system uses a small grinder pump located at each point of connection, typically a house or business. In these cases untreated sewage is discharged from a sanitary sewer into the environment prior to reaching sewage treatment facilities. To avoid this, maintenance is required. In general, all sewers deteriorate with age, but infiltration and inflow are problems unique to sanitary sewers, since both combined sewers and storm drains are sized to carry these contributions. Many older cities still use combined sewers while adjacent suburbs were built with separate sanitary sewers. These methods may be unsuitable for locations where the full diameter of the original pipe is required to carry expected flows, and may be an unwise investment if greater wastewater flows may be anticipated from population growth, increased water use, or new service connections within the expected service life of the repair.Animal feces accumulated on city streets while animal-powered transport moved people and goods.Washington, D.C.: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). With the Porsche 911 GT3 no longer available with anything other than the brand's ultra-quick PDK dual-clutch auto, and word that the Porsche 911 Turbo is headed down a similar path, purists have been gnashing their teeth over the demise of what they feel to be an integral aspect of the performance driving experience. How is the brand's most affordable product - and an SUV, no less - relevant to this discussion.

Why, because it’s available with a genuine, accept-no-imitations six-speed manual transmission. It might seem like an unusual decision for Porsche to stuff a shift-it-yourself unit inside a heavy sport-utility vehicle while at the same time stripping it out of one of the most popular sports cars of all time, but that's just how the product planners in Stuttgart roll. Also: Porsche Realiability Put in Doubt Also: A Few Changes for the 2015 Porsche Cayenne I recently spent over 1,500 kilometres behind the wheel of a manual transmission Cayenne and discovered that the old adage that goes 'be careful what you wish for' is more apt than I had ever imagined. Competitively priced for an mid-size European luxury SUV, the Cayenne's road manners, leather seating, and interior space are excellent. It's also a very practical vehicle, as cargo space is generous even with the reclining and tilting rear row of seats in place. There's no doubt that the navigation system was excellent, even if it didn't know where Canadian Tire Motorsports Park was, and the heated rear seats and parking assistance were a nice bonus. Adaptive HID headlights should honestly be standard at the Cayenne's price point, and the moonroof was a bit on the small side. I think bargain hunting Porsche fans will be happy enough with the base model Cayenne, making these options 'nice to have' rather than 'essential' items. The engine's exhaust note and full-throttle symphony are superb, as is the nice 'whump' sound emitted from its twin tailpipes whenever one lets off of the gas. Of course, on the highway the Porsche is extremely well-behaved, and despite its lack of overwhelming acceleration it's very easy to suddenly be going much faster than you had originally intended (such is the coddling of its suspension system that there is very little sensation of speed while traveling inside the SUV's luxury bubble).

Well, I can't avoid it any longer and I'm just going to come out and say it: I didn't really appreciate the six-speed unit outfitted to the Porsche Cayenne. I know, I know - I'm in the awkward position of complaining about a feature that journalists traditionally beg automakers to install in models of all shapes and sizes. Still, I can't honestly endorse the long throws and widely-spaced ratios embodied by this particular unit. I simply couldn't find the proper rhythm moving through the gears in the manual unit, which is a shame because the Porsche's suspension system was more than happy to tackle curves at a rate of speed that would cause many other sport-utility vehicles to cringe and cower. A big part of the Cayenne's confident cornering capability was its all-wheel drive system, which is rear-biased for the best driver feedback but which can still lock its rear and center differential when the going gets rough. For some people, navigation and advanced safety features such as blind spot warning and adaptive cruise control will be worth more than the ability to comfortably slice an apex on a country road, but Porsche knows that it will be able to tempt more than a few enthusiasts over to its way of thinking with this most affordable model despite its lack of gadgets and gizmos. Just make sure you take the money you saved by sticking with the entry-level Cayenne and use it to order the eight-speed automatic. I would have liked it even more if it had been outfitted with an automatic transmission. Something went wrong.
